Have you
ever wondered where web developers get the nifty graphics
and photographs they use on their clients' websites? Well,
here's the answer: SOME web developers steal them from wherever
they can find them. Other web developers -- such as WebZar.com,
Inc. -- buy their graphics via license from graphics and photo
distributors such as PunchStock.
|
| |
| Yes,
they are expensive. Visit the Punch Stock site and you'll understand
just how expensive. No, we don't own the images, we just license
the images. Our vendors place restrictions on how we can use
their products. Here's an excerpt from a license we own |
| |
| |
"You
may incorporate any image into your own original work and publish,
display and distribute your work in electronic media provided
you include a copyright notice ...as follows: Copyright ©
2005 [your name] and its licensors. All rights reserved."
|
| The
information contiues on to say that we can provide our clients
with a copy of the image as an integral part of WebZar's work
product, but that the client cannot use the images separately
or as part of any other product. Interesting, yes?
How about the HTML/CSS coding itself? Well,
web developers often reuse large sections of their HTML/CSS
coding across a wide client base. There are a limited number
of ways to code a document. If we "sold" each HTML/CSS
coding sequence, we would run out of ways to get our work
completed. In short, we retain our right to reusable code.
Make sense? By the way, the coding structure is independent
of the site's content.
And what about that two-bit word "indemnify"
near the end of the paragraph? Well, most of our clients provide
us content, such as photographs, logos, letterheads, text
copy and more. The indemnify part would help to keep WebZar
out of hot water if a third party made a claim against the
use of something the client provided.
Well, that's pretty much it. We have no nefarious
intentions, we just enjoy doing honest, legal business. Here's
another way of looking at the copyright statement: Our statement
assures you that WebZar.com, Inc. has purchased the necessary
licenses to use the graphic or photographic elements present
on your web page. How about that other web developer you're
considering? Does he or she protect your interests by using
only legal graphics or photos? You might want to ask.
